8/13/2026 - Recent Howell High School graduate Lucy Snow left her mark at the 2026 Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) National Leadership Conference by claiming first place in the nation in the Teaching Strategies competitive event. Snow's accomplishment marked the first time a student from Michigan has won an FCCLA national championship.
Snow competed against students from across the country during the conference, held in Washington, D.C. Her first-place finish recognized her ability to develop and present an original lesson plan while demonstrating knowledge and expertise in incorporating research-based teaching strategies for any grade level or content area. As part of the competition, participants prepared a portfolio and resource container to support their instructional approach before completing an in-person role-play in which they acted as the teacher and an evaluator served as the student.
Four additional Howell High School students also earned national recognition during the conference:
- Sophia Cargill and Alyssa Martin received a Gold medal in the Repurpose and Redesign event.
- Andy Brinker earned a Silver medal in Hospitality, Tourism and Recreation.
- Mary Cheresko received a Bronze medal in Focus on Children.
The students were among more than 10,000 FCCLA members, advisers and guests who attended the National Leadership Conference from across the United States, Puerto Rico and American Samoa.
