9/28/16 – To continue to grow and foster a college-going culture, Howell High School will celebrate Michigan College Month this October. Throughout the month the school will hold several events to promote the post-secondary education options available to seniors and provide help applying for college and financial aid.

The school’s counselors and staff have several activities planned for Michigan College Month including decorated halls, signs on classroom doors indicating where a teacher attended college, fun games and swag giveaways for students who complete a college application. During Michigan College Month all Howell High School seniors will receive several resources to help them prepare to apply to a post-secondary education institution and to help them research various higher education options. Additionally, school staff and volunteers will help seniors complete applications for four and two-year colleges and technical and trade programs.

“There are so many post-secondary education options for students to choose from that it can become overwhelming. We want to ensure that our seniors have the knowledge, resources, and support that they need as they research and apply to various schools and programs,” said Lisa O’Connor, Howell High School dean of students. “During Michigan College Month we hope to get students excited about applying for college and share important information about the college application process and about the various types of financial aid that is available. We will also be helping students complete their college applications. “

During Michigan College Month, Howell High School will host a Financial Aid Night and two Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Help Nights. During Financial Aid Night current Howell High School juniors and seniors and their parents are invited to learn various types of financial aid available to help offset the costs of attending college. During the FAFSA Help Nights parents of current Howell High School seniors will learn about changes in the FAFSA application process and how to file a FAFSA form. Financial Aid Night will be held Monday, Oct. 10 at 6:30 p.m. FAFSA Help Nights will be held Monday, Oct. 17 and Thursday, Oct. 20 at 6:30 p.m. Due to limited space during the FAFSA Help Nights, those interested in attending are asked to reserve a spot by contacting Joan Blair, Howell High School guidance office secretary at [email protected].

About Michigan College Month
Michigan College Month was established in response to Prior-Prior-Year FAFSA legislation. Prior-Prior Year (PPY) refers to a policy enabling students and families to file the FAFSA using tax information from two years ago. For example, a high school senior planning to enroll in college in Fall 2017 will file FAFSA using taxes from 2015. The FAFSA is now available Oct. 1. Michigan College Month emphasizes the relationship between applying to and paying for college. This year, over 300 high schools are expected to participate. Michigan College Month is sponsored by the Michigan College Access Network.
